Jill (Martha Wilkerson) took over behind the mike, and according to the AFRTS Archive blog , G.I. Jive became the most popular show on AFRS. Proudly We Hail was a syndicated Cold War / JET AGE! / Korean War-era radio program that was produced by the US government to promote Army, WAC, and Air Force recruitment. It featured radio dramas in a variety of genres - SciFi, patriotic, true stories, biographical, etc. It was also broadcast on AFRS. Some of these files suffered from that curious practice (that some companies that sell OTR have undertaken) of slightly slowing down the speed of the broadcast. It lengthens the episode length...

Martha Wilkerson (AKA G.I. Jill) hosted a couple shows on the United States government-produced Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). One program she hosted was G.I. Jive ( http://archive.org/details/AfrsG.i.Jive ) and another was Jill's All-Time Jukebox, which ran concurrent to the other show during part of its run (she mentions it during G.I. Jive). Also see The Army-Navy Screen Magazine 55 (1945) here on Archive.org. I only have 5 Jill's All-Time Jukebox shows :( but there are some real gems....

In 1942, CBS produced a series of six 15-minute programs that were broadcast from Army camps around the country. Each episode of What Are We Fighting For? contains a remarkable speech; my favorite is Alvin C. York's: 01 The Road To War - Edward R. Murrow at West Point, New York 02 What Pearl Harbor Means To Me - Lee White at Ft. George Meade, Maryland 03 Your Enemies, The Fascists - William L. Shirer at Fort Belvoir, Virginia (no open nor close) 04 The Russians Are Our Kind Of People - Quentin...

"This is a sound recording of President Roosevelt's address on accepting the Four Freedoms Award, presented by the Italian-American Labor Council. In it, he said: 'The American Army--including thousands of Americans of Italian descent--entered Italy not as conquerors, but as liberators. Their objective is military, not political. When that military objective is accomplished--and much of it has not yet been accomplished--the Italian people will be free to work out their own destiny, under a...

Time Magazine said it was sponsored by the Office for Emergency Management (link http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,795612,00.html behind a paywall but you can see part of it). Polio outbreaks in the United States in the summer of 1946 were at an all-time high. In Minneapolis, Minnesota there was a voluntary quarantine - and with no newspaper delivery boys there was no Sunday Funnies. Mayor (and future Vice President) Hubert H. Humphrey came to the rescue and read the Sunday comics over WCCO (and did a pretty good job). There is more about the Stay At Home Campaign and this broadcast at the Minneapolis Star Tribune: http://www.startribune.com/local/blogs/116452338.html
